With more and more people turning to Google for information, churches need to understand the concept of search engine optimization (SEO) and utilize it to improve their online visibility.

Understanding SEO for Churches

SEO, or search engine optimization, is the practice of optimizing your website to rank higher in search engine results.

When it comes to churches, SEO focuses on making your church website more visible in search results and east to find for potential visitors.

By strategically incorporating relevant keywords, improving site performance, and leveraging local SEO techniques, churches can enhance their online presence and reach a wider audience.

Whether you’re a new church looking to establish a digital footprint or an established church wanting to expand your reach, understanding the concept of church SEO is crucial for success in today’s online landscape.

The Importance of Church SEO

You have to think of your digital marketing as the person you are trying to reach.

Say a new family moves into the neighbourhood where your church is located and they start looking for a church to attend. Without question, they will go to Google and type something like, “church near me” or “Church in [insert area here]”

The results that they get from Google will either have your church listed or they won’t and SEO is the process and strategy you need to make sure that your church IS listed.

And not only listed, but multiple times and in the right spots.

The other incredibly important, but less talked about reason you should implement an SEO strategy is because of the potential income your church could realize.

Does your church rent its facility?

Does your church have paid events?

Does your church have online classes, courses or services?

Does your church want to benefit from increased traffic to its website that could be monetized in a safe and relevant way that helps the mission of the church?

If the answer to any of these is YES then SEO could be the solution.

Major Components of Church SEO – Overview

SEO is broken down into smaller subsections which makes the work more manageable and effecient. I’ll mention each of them here and then explain more down below.

Keyword Research

Start by conducting keyword research to pinpoint the terms people are searching for when looking for a church like yours. SEO at the simplest level is matching your content with the search terms people are using in Google.

There are several SEO keywords for churches, but it really boils down to a few primary search terms, and then a few secondary. After that it is capturing peoples attention through blogging, events and ministries.

Example – In Calgary where we live someone who moves here and now lives in Marda Loop (community in Calgary) would search for something like Christian church in Marda Loop, or Catholic church in south west Calgary, or churches in Westhills. Each of these would return similar but different results.

Keywords research is the process of finding keywords that people use that are the closest to who you are and what type of church you have.

Strategies to Improve Church SEO

Ok, lets get into some nuts and bolts. Here is a list of things you can implement right away, and see actual results.

1. Enhancing Site Performance for Better SEO

Improving the speed and mobile optimization of your church’s website can have a positive impact on its SEO. Google likes it and so does the user.

Tools – There are two tools you can use to help with this, Google Search Console and GTMetrix.

Making sure your foundation is set up correctly helps everything else you do make sense.

Enhancing user experience through effective site design and functionality contributes to better SEO results. Usually, this is because user metrics (things like click-through rate, time on page, bounce rate and # of pages per visit) help signal to Google that your website and content is helpful.

You need to make sure that your site looks good and works on desktop and mobile, and in fact for most businesses and churches, mobile is more important. 60% of visitors will first see your site on a phone.

2. Importance of High-Quality, Relevant Content

When we talk about content we typically mean the text or the words on the page, then the images, video and other rich media.

When it comes to SEO the actual text on the page is massively important. It HAS to match the search intent of the user and satisfy the quality and quantity of content that Google is looking for. This is because it wants to satisfy the user with your content.

Consistently providing relevant content related to church topics is essential for improving your church’s SEO ranking. Additionally, using relevant keywords in your church’s content is crucial for better search engine visibility. Ensuring that your church website regularly features quality, relevant content is key to achieving the best results in Google search.

Pro-tip – make sure you include content about your local area, this helps send additional signals to Google about where you are.

3 – Content Optimization for Church SEO

Optimizing content for church SEO involves the strategic use of specific words in specific places. The process begins with a few key places on the page and then continues with the rest of the text and images.

Simple Optimization Guide – The 80/20

When it comes to optimizing your content there are a few things that matter more than all the others and this is where you should start.

  • URL – This is the part that comes after your and these words are very important. Obviously, this won’t work for your home page, but remember to not keep the title of your homepage as “home”
  • Page Title – the title of your page is critical, and Google will read the title and use it to understand what the content is about.
    • You can see in the example below this church has added “Anthem Church” to their meta-title tag but you don’t see it when you visit the website. But you DO see it when you search in Google for Church in Anthem AZ. Smart.
  • The H1 Tag – The first heading on your page after the title is also a huge signal to Google, and should typically be the same as the title, or at the very least have the entity first in the heading.
    • Don’t let design overrule SEO in this case. You can always change the font size, but the H1 tag is critical to have on your page.
    • The same church above has made this mistake…they have an H1 that doesn’t help them with their local SEO…see it here.

My recommendation to them would be to change the H1 tag to be more SEO-optimized. They currently rank #2 and this simple change could push them into #1. Then we would change this current H1 to an H2.

  • First 100 words – The first 100 to 200 words of your text content is also a significant signal to Google about what your content is about. It is also more often than not the only part a user might read. So make it sharp and engaging but make sure to include your keyword.

Bonus Round – once the above is complete you want to also add keyword-rich text in the following spots. These are not as critical but they can help differentiate you against a competitor that is doing the same 80/20 as you.

  • Alt-tags on images – describe what your images are, this helps blind people but also tells Google more information about your page.
  • H2 and H3 tags – As you move down the page is it a good idea to have your keyword in these spots.
  • Other pages – On your other pages you want to place a link in the text back to the page you are trying to rank. Be careful not to overdo it, but 2-3 of these will help. So from your About Us page, your Services page and your kids page have a link back to the home page with the anchor text of your location and church name.

Make sure your location information is on your important pages. The footer is a great place to have it, but also your home page. You can also utilize a Google maps embed to help send more location signals and make it easy for people to find you.

Identifying and Using Relevant Keywords

Identifying and utilizing the right keywords is essential for optimizing your church website. Begin by conducting thorough keyword research to identify the most relevant terms for your content. Focus on using keywords that individuals are likely to search for when looking for a church in your area. Integrate local church SEO keywords to enhance your church’s visibility within your community.
